MATERIAL ENCOUNTER
Photography by Jonny Pickup
Material as Structure, Surface & Process
Material Encounter brings together works by Adam Weismann, Alexandre Clanis, Alberto Ruiz Villar and Jordi Artigas. The exhibition foregrounds clay, pigment, industrial paper and layered painting as visible foundations of contemporary practice.
Contemporary Art Gallery in Barcelona
From its space in Barcelona’s Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera neighbourhood, in Ciutat Vella, Matiz Gallery presents abstract and process-based practices by artists from Europe and Latin America. The gallery develops exhibitions, original works, and evolving artistic positions shaped by material experimentation, gesture, spatial inquiry, and contemporary forms of abstraction.
Through its program, Matiz connects collectors, architects, designers, hospitality projects, and art professionals with distinctive contemporary artworks. The gallery works with artists including Alexandre Clanis, Nina Akhobadze, Adam Weismann, Jordi Artigas, Palma Alvariño, Alberto Ruiz Villar, Carlos Delgado, Catherine Parra, Lori Goldberg, Rafael Dussan, Simon Cruz, Simon Sepúlveda, Alex Voinea, and Sébastien Chéramy.
Founded by Ivonne Parra and Juan Ramirez, Matiz is also developing a curatorial line that examines the relationship between art, migration, displacement, and social imagination. Through BASPcr — Barri de l’Art Sant Pere, Santa Caterina i la Ribera — the gallery explores how exhibitions and temporary cultural spaces can create visibility, encounter, and new forms of neighborhood dialogue. Matiz Gallery is a member of Galeries d’Art de Catalunya.
Winter 2025/26 EXHIBITION
Among Us (Entre Nosotres / Entre Nosaltres) inaugurates the new space of Matiz Gallery, in collaboration with bureau mud. The exhibition brings together works by Nina Akhobadze, the presentation of Danarti_zine, and a roundtable with Aea: Culture Initiative, expanding the dialogue with artists from Europe and Latin America.
The show poses a central question: How do we rebuild a sense of belonging when migration disrupts it? Through art, it creates a space of dialogue and solidarity connecting Tbilisi, Barcelona, and Latin American contexts.
